The contents of this book are from the Federal Writers’ Project Slave Narratives: A Folk History of Slavery in the United States From Interviews with Former Slaves.
Included are two narratives of former slaves, Amy Chapman and George Young, as well as the guidelines and interview questions provided by the Federal Writers’ Project to assist their staff with the interview process. The text in this book represents the only formal attempt to collect the stories of enslaved African Americans.
In the process of researching this book, I discovered that there were parts of the original transcript of Amy Chapman’s interview excluded from the official Federal Writers’ Project document. These excerpts are included in this book.
